Etymology: Greek ἀγκύλωσις stiffening of the joints, < ἀγκυλοῦν to crook, < ἀγκύλος crooked. The reg. transliteration of the Greek is ancylosis; to preserve the hard c this has been spelled with ch, for which some substitute k. Compare French ankylose.
