Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: < the Germanic base of five adj. + a variant of the Germanic base of tenth adj. showing voicing of *h to *g (by Verner's Law; see further discussion of form types at tenth adj.). Compare Old Icelandic fimmtugandi (Icelandic fimmtugasti , with suffix substitution (compare -est suffix), probably after Middle Low German), Old Swedish fämtighinde (also fämtionda (Swedish femtionde ), with alteration after the cardinal form), Danish femtiende . Some forms in English (including the modern standard form) apparently show re-formation after fifty adj. and -eth (see -th suffix2).Forms in the continental Germanic languages appear typically to show re-formation after the respective cardinal form, with different suffixation (superlative: see -est suffix), as Old Frisian fīftichsta (West Frisian fyftichste ), Middle Dutch vijftichste (Dutch vijftigste ), Middle Low German veftigeste , veftichste , Old High German fimfzugōsto (Middle High German vünfzigist , German fünfzigste ). In Old English and Middle English there is partial formal overlap with fifteenth adj.; compare discussion at sixtieth adj. and n.
The ordinal numeral belonging to the cardinal numeral fifty adj. and n. fiftieth part: one of fifty equal parts into which a quantity may be divided.
