Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: fifth adj., monarchy n.
Etymology: < fifth adj. + monarchy n., with reference to the eschatological fifth and last empire referred to in the book of Daniel (Daniel 2:44), which was identified with the millennial reign that Christ would establish after his second coming. Compare fifth monarch n.The four historical kingdoms mentioned in the preceding verses (Daniel 2:37–43) are traditionally identified with the Babylonian, Persian, Greek, and Roman empires.
The last of the five great empires referred to in the prophecy of Daniel (Dan. ii. 44), in the 17th cent. identified with the millennial reign of Christ predicted in the apocalypse. Also attributive, esp. in Fifth-monarchy man n. one of those in 17th cent. who believed that the Second Coming of Christ was immediately at hand, and that it was the duty of Christians to be prepared to assist in establishing his reign by force, and in the meantime to repudiate all allegiance to any other government.
