单词 festology
释义

festologyn.

Brit. /fɛˈstɪlədʒi/, U.S. /fɛˈstɪlədʒi/
Forms:

α. 1700s– festology.

β. 1800s festilogy.

Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin festilogium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin festilogium (1494 or earlier: see note) < classical Latin fēstum feast n. + -ilogium (in martilogium martyrology: see martiloge n.), in α. forms with remodelling of the second element after -ology comb. form. The Latin word is used in J. Colgan's Acta sanctorum Hiberniae (1645) with specific reference to the 9th-cent. Early Irish metrical martyrology known as Féilire Óengusso (now usually translated as ‘Martyrology of Óengus’), as a translation of Early Irish félire calendar of religious festivals, martyrology. It seems likely that Colgan found the (otherwise uncommon) Latin word in Jan Mombaer's influential Rosetum exercitiorum, which was originally published in 1494 and reprinted several times until the early 17th cent. Early Irish félire is < féil (religious) festival, feast day ( < classical Latin vigilia watch, wakefulness, watch kept on the eve of a religious feast: see vigil n.1) + -ire , variant of -aire , suffix forming derivatives ( < classical Latin -ārius -ary suffix1).
In Ireland: a calendar or account of saints and their feast days; a martyrology.Chiefly with reference to the 9th-century work attributed to Óengus: see etymology.
