单词 ferrure
释义

ferruren.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ferrure.
Etymology: < French ferrure action of shoeing a horse (c1285 or earlier in Anglo-Norman, 1581 in continental French; c1150 in Old French as ferreüre in sense ‘iron casing, armour’) < ferrer to shoe (horses) (c1140; also in sense ‘to cover (an object) with iron’ (c1140); < post-classical Latin ferrare to shoe (horses) (frequently from 11th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin ferrum iron: see ferro- comb. form) + -ure -ure suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin ferrura horse-shoeing, ironworking (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources). Compare earlier ferrurie n.Post-classical Latin ferrare is also recorded in the 6th-cent. grammarian Priscian, but there is no contextual evidence for the word until much later.
Obsolete. rare.
Horse-shoeing, farriery.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries. Quot. 1676 probably derives from a misreading of Blount's use of the French word (see quots. 1670, 1673).
