Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ferrūgineus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ferrūgineus of a dark brownish colour, (of taste) rusty ( < ferrūgin- , ferrūgō iron rust (see ferruginous adj.) + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix.For the range of colours denoted by classical Latin ferrūgineus see ferruginous adj.
1. Resembling iron rust in colour; of a reddish brown; = ferruginous adj. 1.In quots. 1633, 1859 describing the boat of Charon the ferryman in the underworld of classical mythology (Virgil Aeneid 6. 303), and apparently referring to a darker colour (see etymological note on the shades of colour denoted by the Latin etymon at ferruginous adj.).
