Etymology: < classical Latin ferrum iron (see ferro- comb. form) + -ous suffix, perhaps partly after French ferreux (1611 in an apparently isolated attestation in Cotgrave in sense ‘as hard as iron’, subsequently from 1752 in sense ‘containing iron in significant quantities’; the specific chemical use designating compounds in which iron has an oxidation number of +2 appears to be attested slightly later than in English (1838)).
