Etymology: < French anchusine (1834 or earlier) < scientific Latin Anchusa anchusa n. + French -ine -ine suffix⁵, apparently after anchusique (in acide anchusique : see anchusic acid n. at anchusic adj.; compare the discussion in quot. 1847). The β. forms show remodelling of the ending after -in suffix¹. Compare German Anchusin (1847, in a translation of the passage cited in quot. 1847, or earlier). Compare earlier anchusic adj.
