Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French anchusine.
Etymology: < French anchusine (1834 or earlier) < scientific Latin Anchusa anchusa n. + French -ine -ine suffix5, apparently after anchusique (in acide anchusique : see anchusic acid n. at anchusic adj.; compare the discussion in quot. 1847). The β. forms show remodelling of the ending after -in suffix1. Compare German Anchusin (1847, in a translation of the passage cited in quot. 1847, or earlier). Compare earlier anchusic adj.
Chemistry. Now rare.
A red colouring matter obtained from the root of the plant alkanet, Alkanna tinctoria, used as a food colouring and in cosmetics; also called alkannin.Systematic name: 5,8-dihydroxy-2-[1-hydroxy-4-methylpent-3-enyl]naphthalene-1,4-dione; C16H16O5.

1847 P. Bolley & R. Wydler in Chem. Gaz. 15 Nov. 438 As the acid reaction which Pelletier ascribed to this substance is not peculiar to it, the name Anchusic acid must be changed into Alkanet-red or Anchusine.
