Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anchūsa.
Etymology: < classical Latin anchūsa alkanet, in scientific Latin also Anchusa , genus name (1753) < Hellenistic Greek ἄγχουσα alkanet, probably an alteration (after ἄγχειν to squeeze, strangle: see anchoic adj.) of ancient Greek ἔγχουσα, denoting the same plant, of unknown origin.
Originally: the plant alkanet, Alkanna tinctoria (family Boraginaceae) or the root of this plant, from which a red dye is obtained (now rare). In later use: any plant of the genus Anchusa, comprising herbaceous plants which resemble alkanet and are typically cultivated for their bright blue flowers. Also (in form Anchusa): the genus itself.Alkanet was formerly included in the genus Anchusa.Cf. alkanet n., bugloss n.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 133.
