Any of a series of solid compounds with the general formula MFe₂O₄ (where M is a metal ion in the +2 oxidation state or a stoichiometrically equivalent mixture of such ions); (as a mass noun) material of this kind. Also more widely: any compound that can be regarded as being formed from ferric oxide or hydroxide and a metal oxide or other base.Many ferrites MFe₂O₄ have magnetic properties and a low electrical conductivity that make them suitable for use in permanent magnets, transformer cores, and other high-frequency electrical components. All have crystal structures related to that of the mineral spinel (MgAl₂SiO₄).
