Etymology: < Portuguese ferrínho (1985 or earlier in this sense; also earlier in plural ferrínhos denoting the triangle (as a percussion instrument)), lit. ‘small (piece of) iron’ < ferro iron (1136; < classical Latin ferrum : see ferro- comb. form) + -inho , diminutive suffix ( < classical Latin -īnus : see -ine suffix⁴).

Music.

In the Cape Verde Islands: a percussion instrument consisting of an iron bar which is scraped by another metallic object, traditionally used in funana music (see funana n.).
