释义

ferramentn.

Forms: late Middle English ferremen, late Middle English ferrementes (plural), late Middle English–1600s ferment, late Middle English–1600s ferrament.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French ferrament; Latin ferrāmentum.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman ferrament, Anglo-Norman and Middle French ferrement, ferment, Middle French ferremen (French ferrement ) article of iron, iron instrument or tool (12th cent. in Old French), ironwork used in building (beginning of the 14th cent. or earlier), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin ferrāmentum implement of iron < ferrum iron (see ferro- comb. form) + -mentum -ment suffix. Compare farrement n.Compare Old Occitan ferramen, Italian ferramento (a1292), masculine nouns. Compare also Middle French ferremente (13th cent. in Old French), Old Occitan ferramenta (feminine nouns), both in sense ‘articles of iron collectively’ ( < classical Latin ferrāmenta, plural of ferrāmentum). It is unclear whether the following earlier occurrence in a Latin context should be taken as showing the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman noun:1410–12 Accts. & Inventories J. Starlyng in Mariner's Mirror (1914) 4 168/2 ij ferrementes pro clausur' porte.
