Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀγχίαλος near the sea ( < ἄγχι near (see anchitherium n.) + ἁλός , ἅλς sea: see halo- comb. form¹) + -ine suffix¹.Coined in English by L. B. Holthuis, but first published in the Netherlands (compare quot. 1973).

Designating pools, caves, or other environments that are supplied with saline or brackish water through an underground connection to the sea; relating to or characteristic of such environments.
