Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French veutrer.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman vealtrer, vealterer, veltrier, veutrer, feutrer person in charge of a pack of hounds (second half of the 12th cent.; compare Middle French veautrier ) < Old French veltre , viautre hound (c1100; Middle French veautre , Middle French, French vautre ) + -ier -ier suffix (compare -er suffix2). Compare post-classical Latin veltrarius (frequently from late 11th cent. in British sources; also as valtrarius , vautrarius , veautrarius , veutrarius ). Compare veuterer n. and vauterer n.In α. forms perhaps < Middle French veautre hound, confused with veautrier person in charge of hounds; compare veuterer n. Old French veltre , viautre is ultimately < classical Latin vertragus greyhound (in post-classical Latin also veltraga (perhaps 8th cent.)) < an unattested Gaulish word < Gaulish uer- ( < the same Indo-European base as over adv.) + a reflex of the Celtic base of Welsh troed foot (further etymology uncertain and disputed). Compare Old Occitan veltre hound (12th cent.), and also ( < French) Italian veltro hound (a1308).

A person who looks after and manages hunting dogs. Also more widely: an attendant. Sometimes with prefixed defining word, as fox-fewterer, yeoman-fewterer.
