单词 feddle
释义

feddlen.

Forms: Old English foedel (Mercian, in compounds), late Middle English fedill (northern), 1600s fedle.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: feed v., -el suffix1.
Etymology: Apparently < feed v. + -el suffix1.Compare Old English fēdels fattened animal, used especially with reference to fowl, which is cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch voetsel food, nutrition (Dutch voedsel ), Middle Low German vōtsel food, Old High German fuotisal pasturing, feeding, Old Icelandic fœðsla food, Old Danish føzæl , føzl feeding, upkeep < the Germanic base of feed v. + the Germanic base of -els suffix. Old English fēdels is attested both earlier and more frequently than fēdel- feddle n.; compare:eOE Corpus Gloss. (1890) 15/2 Altilia, foedils.lOE List of Farm Goods, Yaxley, Hunts. (Sawyer 1448) in S. E. Kelly Charters of Peterborough Abbey (2009) 325 Þis is þæt erfgewrit æt Geaceslea: þryttene wepmen weorcewyrþe, & v wimmen, & æhta geonge men, & xvi oxan, faldreþere, & iii hund scepa..& i fedels swin.It is possible that feddle n. is derived from fēdels by suffix substitution. It is not entirely certain that sense 2 shows the same word (for an alternative explanation, perhaps compare faddle v. 1). For a possible comparable use of Old English fēdels with reference to a person, compare the disputed phrase cyninges fedesl (in a late copy of a 7th-cent. Kentish legal code), which has sometimes been interpreted as meaning ‘a person fed or maintained by the king’, although the most recent editor argues that the more likely sense is ‘feeding of the king’ (compare Dict. Old Eng. at fēdels, sense 2, and see further L. Oliver in Anglo-Saxon England 27 (1998) 31–40):lOE Laws of Æðelberht (Rochester) xii. 4 Cyninges fedesl xx scillinga forgelde.
Obsolete.
