Forms: 1600s anatreptick, 1700s– anatreptic.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin anatrepticus; Greek ἀνατρεπτικός.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin anatrepticus (1546 or earlier with reference to Platonic dialogues; 1542 or earlier in a medical context), or its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἀνατρεπτικός turning upside down, upsetting, in Hellenistic Greek specifically in a medical context (e.g. of the stomach) and designating certain refutative dialogues of Plato (Diogenes Laertius) < ἀνα- ana- prefix + Hellenistic Greek τρεπτικός causing change in (although this is apparently first attested later: see protreptic adj.), after ancient Greek ἀνατρέπειν to overturn, to overthrow.
Philosophy. Now somewhat rare.
Of an argument or discourse: that serves to refute or overthrow an opposing argument.Originally and chiefly with reference to one of the classes into which the Platonic dialogues were divided by ancient commentators (see esp. Diogenes Laertius Lives Eminent Philosophers iii. §49).

1996 Classical Rev. 46 267 A basic division..leads to a subdivision of those..for inquiry into those for training..and those aimed at victory (endeictic and anatreptic).
