单词 fenks
释义

fenksn.

/fɛnks/
Forms: 1800s fenk- (in compounds), 1800s fenks, 1800s finks (English regional (Yorkshire)).
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch vinken.
Etymology: Probably < Dutch vinken (plural) pieces of chopped whale blubber ready for boiling to extract train oil (1658; 16th cent. in the sense ‘dish consisting of small pieces of chopped meat and vegetables’ (also more fully plukte vinken , plukke-vinken , literally ‘chopped finches’), transferred use of vinken , plural of vink finch n., apparently from a perceived resemblance to such birds used as food).Compare Middle Low German vinken (in plückede vinken, plücke-vinken (German regional (Low German) plükte Finken, Plükfinken)) (plural) dish consisting of small pieces of chopped meat and vegetables, and also (ultimately after Middle Low German) Old Swedish (in a late source) plockadhe finkar (plural) dish consisting of chopped meat (esp. entrails) sometimes mixed with chopped vegetables (Swedish regional plockfinka, plockfink), Swedish regional finkar (plural) small pieces of fried goose entrails, pork lard chopped up and melted down (19th cent. or earlier), Danish regional finker (plural) dish consisting of small pieces of chopped meat (esp. entrails) with apple, onion, etc. (c1700; also plukkefinker). With similar semantic development compare Danish benløse fugle, literally ‘boneless birds’, dish consisting of small pieces of fried meat (1710).
With plural agreement. The fibrous parts of the blubber of a whale, which contain the oil; the refuse of the blubber when melted. Also in combinations, as fenk(s)-back: see quot.
