单词 anathema maranatha
释义

anathema maranathaphr.

Brit. /əˌnaθᵻmə marəˈnaθə/, U.S. /əˌnæθəmə ˌmɛrəˈnæθə/
Forms: also with capital initials.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀνάθεμα μαρὰν ἀθά.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἀνάθεμα μαρὰν ἀθά, former reading (in early printed editions of the New Testament: see below) of ἀνάθεμα. Mαράνα θά (in εἴ τις οὐ ϕιλεῖ τον Κύριον, ἤτω ἀνάθεμα. Mαράνα θά ‘If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. Maranatha’: 1 Corinthians 16:22) < ἀνάθεμα thing accursed (see anathema n.1) + μαράνα θά Maranatha n. Compare post-classical Latin anathema maranatha (Vulgate). The reading ἀνάθεμα μαρὰν ἀθά occurs in some early editions of the Greek New Testament, most notably in Erasmus's 1516 edition. It arose from a misapprehension of ἀνάθεμα and μαρὰν ἀθά as forming one coherent solemn imprecatory phrase; various attempts were made to explain this, and the King James Bible (compare the variant readings in quot. 1526) was probably largely responsible for its currency. The standard modern critical editions of the Greek New Testament take ἀνάθεμα and μαράνα θά as belonging to two separate clauses, and modern English translations of the Bible follow this view. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mærănæ•þă) /mærəˈnæθə/.
Used as an intensified form of anathema n.1 (in various senses); an object of vilification or disgust; a terrible curse. Cf. Maranatha n.
