单词 fatherling
释义

fatherlingn.

Brit. /ˈfɑːðəlɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈfɑðərlɪŋ/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: father n., -ling suffix1.
Etymology: < father n. + -ling suffix1.In quot. 1874 at sense 1 resulting from association of either Italian Paterini, plural of Paterino, or post-classical Latin Paterini, plural noun (see Patarene n.) with classical Latin pater pater n.2 and Italian -ino -ine suffix4, as if the name of the members of the sect meant ‘petty fathers’. Blunt's characterization of the name of the sect as ‘originally a term of reproach flung by the secular at the regular clergy’ is incorrect, as is his use of the English word as a gloss for the name of the sect. In quot. 1968 at sense 1 after Russian †fateriška (1866 in an isolated attestation in the passage translated) < fater (1866, also in Dostoevsky; < German Vater father n.) + -iška , pejorative suffix forming nouns. In quot. 1826 at sense 2 probably after German Väterchen fatherkin n.2; compare also Väterlein , in same sense (17th cent.; < Vater father n. + -lein , suffix forming diminutives). In quot. 1836 at sense 2 after Russian batjuška (1619 in Old Russian; < batja father + -uška, hypocoristic suffix).
