Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin familia , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin familia family n. + -ism suffix. In sense 2 after French familisme (1833 in this sense in the work of Charles Fourier). Compare earlier familist n.The β. forms show remodelling of the first element after family n.
1. Theology. Frequently with capital initial. The doctrine and practice of the Family of Love. See family n. 5. Now historical.
