单词 farmland
释义

farmlandn.

Brit. /ˈfɑːmland/, U.S. /ˈfɑrmˌlænd/
Forms: see farm n.2 and land n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: farm n.2, land n.1
Etymology: < farm n.2 + land n.1, perhaps originally as a reinterpretation of Old English feormeland.Compare late Old English feormeland land yielding food rent (in a text composed 1072–8; < farm n.1 + land n.1, perhaps showing the genitive of the first element; see discussion at farm n.2 on the probable early influence on the latter of farm n.1):lOE Northants. Geld Roll in A. J. Robertson Anglo-Saxon Charters (1956) 230 Þerof is gewered an & tuenti hide & twadel an hide & fourti hide inland & x hide þes kynges ahhen fermeland. Earlier currency is perhaps implied by the place name Fermelaundes, Cumberland (1292; now Farmlands), although it is uncertain whether this should be interpreted as showing the present word or the reflex of Old English feormeland.
Originally: (an area of) leased or rented land. Now usually: (an area of) land used for or suitable for agricultural purposes, esp. growing crops. In quot. 1357-8 with reference to an area of leased or rented land at Hildercle (now Hinderclay), Suffolk.
