Etymology: < French anonyme (adjective) whose name is not specified (1540 in Middle French), having no name (1557), (noun) person whose name is not known (1681 in the passage translated in quot. 1683 at sense B. 1) < post-classical Latin anonymus or its etymon ancient Greek ἀνώνυμος , adjective (for both, see anonymous adj.). Compare earlier anonymous n. and later anonymous adj.
