Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anomia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anomia lawlessness, sin (5th or 6th cent.; earlier (4th cent.) as a Greek word in Latin authors) < ancient Greek ἀνομία lawlessness, lawless conduct, in Hellenistic Greek especially in theological contexts < ἄνομος lawless (see anomo- comb. form) + -ία -y suffix3.
Obsolete.
Disregard for or violation of law, esp. divine law; (also more generally) lawlessness. Also: an instance of this.
