Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek Ἀνόμοιοι , ἀνόμοιος , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek Ἀνόμοιοι, members of an Arian sect which held that God and Christ are essentially different (4th cent.), use as noun of masculine plural of ancient Greek ἀνόμοιος unlike, dissimilar < ἀν- an- prefix2 + ὅμοιος like, similar (see homoeo- comb. form) + -an suffix. Compare heteroousian adj. and n.Compare post-classical Latin Anomoiani , plural (1580 or earlier), earlier Anomiani (see note). Compare also post-classical Latin anomoeum , denoting the doctrine of the Anomoeans (4th cent. in Jerome). With the β. forms compare post-classical Latin Anomiani , plural (4th cent.). In both Latin and English this form was often reinterpreted as deriving from ancient Greek ἄνομος lawless (see anomo- comb. form); compare e.g. 1620 W. Hart tr. F. de Croÿ Three Conformities iii. vii. 194 The Anomians were so called, as being without any Law.1645 T.
