Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin; modelled on a German lexical item. Partly a borrowing from Greek; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin anypostasia; Greek ἀνυπόστασις.
Etymology: Partly (i) (in α. forms) < post-classical Latin anypostasia (1753 or earlier) < Greek ἀνυπόστασις (see below) + classical Latin -ia -ia suffix1; and partly (ii) (in β. forms) < Greek ἀνυπόστασις unsubstantiality, in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Euripides Hecuba 702 < ancient Greek ἀν- an- prefix2 + ὑπόστασις substance, substantial existence (see hypostasis n.); in both cases originally after German Anypostasie (1763 or earlier).
Theology.
The condition or state of having no independent existence as a person, spec. with reference to the human nature of Christ as having no existence separate from his dual human and divine nature. Also: the doctrine or belief that maintains this. Cf. enhypostasia n., hypostasis n. 5(a), Nestorianism n.

1863 P. Fairbairn tr. I. A. Dorner Hist. Devel. Doctr. Person Christ 2nd Division III. 300 He describes the Logos..as the primal personality.., he holds the significance of the doctrine of the anhypostasis [Ger. Anypostasie] of humanity to be, that God is the essence of humanity.
1954 Sc. Jrnl. Theol. 7 249 By anhypostasia classical Christology asserted that in the assumptio carnis the human nature of Christ had no independent per se subsistence apart from the event of the Incarnation, apart from the hypostatic union.
2009 R. T. Walker in T. F. Torrance Atonement p. lxxiv Anhypostasia tells us the incarnation was purely the act of God in which he assumed the human nature of all humanity.
