Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Dutch lexical item, partly modelled on a German lexical item, and partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: fast adj., land n.1
Etymology: < fast adj. + land n.1, after Dutch vaste aarde (a1531), vast land, vasteland (1567), German Festland (1576 or earlier), and their model post-classical Latin terra firma terra firma n., all in the senses ‘mainland, continent’.
1. The mainland, as distinguished from islands; the continent. Obsolete.
