单词 fastigious
释义

fastigiousadj.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin fastigiosus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin fastigiosus grand, befitting a person of high rank, (of a person) haughty (in undated glossaries; from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin fastīgium fastigium n. + -ōsus -ous suffix.
Obsolete.
High, eminent, exalted. Sometimes with additional literal reference to a fastigium (see fastigium n. 1a).In quot. 1773 apparently with the figurative sense ‘haughty, overweening’ (cf. lofty adj. 2a), but perhaps simply an error for fastidious (see fastidious adj. 2a).
