单词 angus
释义

Angusn.

Brit. /ˈaŋɡəs/, U.S. /ˈæŋɡəs/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Angus.
Etymology: < Angus, the name of a historic county (and council area) in north-eastern Scotland, where the breed originates. The place name. The county of Angus (Scottish Gaelic Aonghas; 12th cent. as Enegus), was apparently named after one of several early medieval Pictish kings named Angus (Scottish Gaelic Aonghas, Early Irish Óengus; compare Pictish Onuist), probably originally as part of a longer name with a sense such as ‘territory of Angus’ (compare Scottish Gaelic Bràigh Aonghais, lit. ‘braes of Angus’, used as a place name to denote the upland parts of Angus). There is no record of the Pictish name of the region. Earlier word for the cattle. Compare occasional earlier instances of Angusshire (a fuller name of the county), used attributively to designate a kind of cattle (1763 in Angusshire oxen).
I. Simple uses.
1. Originally: a type of beef cattle occurring in Angus in Scotland, typically black in colour and having either small horns or no horns. In later use (more fully †polled Angus): a breed of hornless black or red beef cattle developed in Angus and now widely kept elsewhere; an animal or animals of this breed. This breed is now also called Aberdeen Angus: see Aberdeen n. 2.Black and red Angus cattle are registered as separate breeds in some countries.
