Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin anarchos; Greek ἄναρχος.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anarchos that does not follow any rule (a1535) or its etymon ancient Greek ἄναρχος without a chief or head ( < ἀν- an- prefix2 + -αρχος -arch comb. form1), after monarch n.1, oligarch n., tetrarch n., etc. With use as noun compare earlier anarchist n., and also earlier anarchism n., anarchy n. With use as adjective compare earlier anarchal adj., anarchial adj., anarchic adj., anarchical adj., and anarchist adj.French †anarche is only attested as adjective in the sense ‘having neither government nor laws’ (1611 in Cotgrave; obsolete after 1660); the passage cited in quot. 1800 at sense A. 2 is translated from an unpublished French manuscript.
