Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anaptycticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anaptycticus (1878 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἀνάπτυκτος that may be opened ( < ἀνα- ana- prefix + πτυκτός folded < the stem of πτύσσειν to fold (see ptyxis n.) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + post-classical Latin -icus -ic suffix. Compare slightly earlier anaptyxis n. and later anaptyctical adj.Compare German anaptyktisch (1879 or earlier), French anaptyctique (1882 or earlier).

Of a letter or sound (esp. a vowel) in a word: resulting from anaptyxis (anaptyxis n.). Also: relating to anaptyxis.
