Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἀνἀποδεικτός , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀνἀποδεικτός not proved, undemonstrated (Aristotle), indemonstrable (Plato), in Hellenistic Greek also incapable of proof ( < ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἀποδεικτός demonstrable: see apodictic adj.) + -ic suffix. Compare earlier apodictic adj.Quot. 1860 is referring to a fragment of Longinus (in a Vatican manuscript of the Gospels) which describes the rhetorical style of St Paul as anapodeictic (Greek ἀνἀποδεικτός ). In quot. 1965 with reference to anapodeictic syllogisms (ancient Greek ἀναπόδεικτοι συλλογισμοί, in Chrysippus, a Stoic philosopher).
Incapable of being proved or demonstrated by argument; spec. (of a syllogism) not requiring proof.
