Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anaphora.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anaphora (in rhetoric) repetition of a word (from 3rd cent. in grammarians), part of the Eucharist which contains the consecration, anamnesis, and communion (1540 or earlier; already in classical Latin denoting the rising or ascension of a star measured in degrees (Pliny)) < ancient Greek ἀναϕορά rising, reference of a thing to a standard, in Hellenistic Greek also offering (Septuagint), repetition of a word, in Byzantine Greek also part of the Eucharist which contains the consecration, anamnesis, and communion < ἀνα- ana- prefix + ϕορά carrying (see metaphor n.), after ἀναϕέρειν to bring, carry up, to offer, to repeat.Compare Middle French, French anaphore (1557 in rhetoric; 1521 as anaphora ; 1649 (in the passage translated in quot. 1661 at sense 2) denoting a part of the Eucharist (rare in this sense before 19th cent.)), Old Occitan anaphora (14th cent.), Spanish anáfora (late 16th cent.), Italian anafora (1575), all earliest in rhetoric. The word was reborrowed in the 16th cent., and there is no continuity of use with the Old English example. With sense 1b compare later anaphor n.
