Origin: A borrowing from Panjabi. Etymon: Panjabi anand kāraj.
Etymology: < Panjabi anand kāraj < anand bliss, joy ( < Sanskrit ānanda : see Ananda n.) + kāraj action, marriage ( < Sanskrit kārya duty, rite, gerundive of kṛ- to make, to do: see karma n.); compare Anand Sāhib , the name of a hymn used in the ceremony (with the honorific Sāhib , used for Sikh scriptural texts). Compare earlier Anand n.

The Sikh wedding ceremony. Cf. Anand n.A religious ceremony with its origins in the 16th cent., the Anand Karaj gained legal status in India in 1909 with the passage of the Anand Marriage Bill, which recognized marriages conducted by a Sikh officiant and according to Sikh traditions. Previously, Sikh marriages had been conducted by a Brahmin and formalized by Hindu rites.The wedding ceremony concludes with the singing of verses from the Anand Sahib, or Hymn of Bliss (see etymology), followed by the congregational prayer.
