l. Bacteriology. [abbreviation of fertility n.] F, F agent, F factor, etc., a particulate factor which determines the mating type of certain bacteria (esp. Escherichia coli); hence F⁺, designating cells possessing the factor but not having it integrated into the chromosome; F⁻, designating cells lacking the factor; F′ (or F prime), designating cells in which a chromosomal fragment is attached to the factor. Also F duction, the conveyance of genes from F′ cells into F⁻ cells.
