Etymology: < eye n.1 + mark n.1 Compare earlier earmark n.Evidence for the sense ‘The action of looking upon, marking with the eye; observation’ given, without illustrative quotations, in N.E.D. (1894) is lacking.
1. Something to be seen or noted visually; an object to look at; something which may serve as a mark to guide the eye. In later use also: a visually distinctive feature (cf. earmark n. 2).
