Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: eye n.1, water n.
Etymology: < eye n.1 + water n.; compare water v. 6. In Caribbean use (sense 1a) perhaps after a model in a West African language (compare in the same sense e.g. Twi ani-nsu , Igbo anya mmili , both lit. ‘eye-water’). With sense 2, compare post-classical Latin aqua ophthalmica (1552 or earlier) and German Augenwasser (1556 or earlier).
