Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French explicable; Latin explicābilis.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French explicable (c1500; French explicable ), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin explicābilis capable of being explained < explicāre explicate v. + -bilis -ble suffix. Compare Italian esplicabile (beginning of the 14th cent.). Compare earlier inexplicable adj.
1. That may be explicated; (formerly) †that may be described in detail or made explicit (obsolete); (subsequently) that may be explained; that admits of being cleared of difficulty, or of being accounted for.
