Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman explanacioun action or process of explaining something (early 14th cent. or earlier), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin explānātiōn-, explānātiō process of setting out clearly in words, exposition, clear enunciation (of words) < explānāt- , past participial stem of explānāre explain v. + -iō -ion suffix1.
