Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ante bellum.
Etymology: < classical Latin ante bellum before the war < ante before (see ante- prefix) + bellum war (see duel n.). Compare postbellum adj., and earlier status quo ante bellum n., status ante bellum n.
