Mathematics a weighted average of all the possible values a random variable can assume, each value being weighted according to the probability of it occurring.In terms of calculation, the expected value of a random variable takes the form of the sum or, if the random variable is continuous, the integral of all values multiplied by their associated probabilities. [Probably after German Erwartungswert (1906 or earlier in this sense; first half of the 19th cent. or earlier in different senses (frequently in actuarial and forestry contexts)), lit. ‘expectation value’. The Russian term is matematičeskoe ožidanie, lit. ‘mathematical expectation’.]
