Etymology: < Old English efenmeten, past participle of efenmetan (as finite verb found only in a single attestation, probably in sense ‘to assemble together’) < even adv. + mete v.1 Compare Old High German ebanmezzōn to equate (with), to make equal in worth or rank to (with dative).In the Old English form efyngemetyn with prefixed base (compare y- prefix); compare also Old English efenameten (adjective) comparable (see variant reading in quot. eOE2, and compare a- prefix1).

Etymology: Probably the reflex of an unattested Old English *efenmǣte , cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Low German evenmāte moderate, Old High German ebanmāzi equal, of the same standing (Middle High German ebenmāze ) < the Germanic base of even adv. + the Germanic base of meet adj.
Obsolete.
Of the same measure or standing as (with with), coequal. Also as n.: (with possessive) a person's equal.
