even Stevenadj.adv.

Brit. /ˌiːvn ˈstiːvn/, U.S. /ˌiv(ə)n ˈstiv(ə)n/
Forms:

α. 1800s– even Stephen, 1800s– even Steven.

β. 1900s– even Stevens.

Origin: Either (i) from a proper name, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: even adj.1, proper name Stephen ; even adj.1, steven n.5
Etymology: Either (i) < even adj.1 + the male forename Stephen, Steven (as a rhyming or reduplicative formation), or (ii) < even adj.1 + steven n.5 (with the formation compare earlier even money n.), although the second element appears to be attested in British rather than U.S. English.Such earlier associations of even adj.1 and the forename Stephen as the following do not appear to have any relation with the later compound:1711 J. Swift Jrnl. to Stella 20 Jan. (1948) I. 171 Now we are even, quoth Stephen, when he gave his wife six blows for one.1809 Scots Mag. Mar. 207/1 Stephen and time are now both even; Stephen beat time, now time's beat Stephen.
colloquial (originally U.S.).
A. adj. Chiefly in predicative use.
= even adj.1 (in various senses); esp. equal. In later use also: equally likely, as likely as not (cf. even money adv.).
