Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French existimation; Latin existimātiōn-, existimātiō.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French existimacion, existimation judgement (c1370), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin existimātiōn-, existimātiō forming of an opinion, opinion, view, judgement, favourable opinion, public opinion, reputation < existimāt- , past participial stem of existimāre existimate v. + -iō -ion suffix1.
literary. Obsolete (in later use humorously pedantic).
