Botany.
The resistant outer layer of the wall of a pollen grain. Cf. extine n.In angiosperms and gymnosperms, the exine typically contains the inert substance sporopollenin, and consists of an outer sculptured portion (sexine) and an inner non-sculptured portion (nexine).

Fritzsche supposes.
