Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French analepsie; Latin analepsia.
Etymology: < Middle French analepsie (French analepsie ) type of epilepsy (a1365 as analempsie , analensie ) and its etymon post-classical Latin analepsia (also analempsia ) gastric epilepsy (7th cent. as analemsia ; from 12th cent. in British sources) < ancient Greek ἀνάληψις analepsis n. + classical Latin -ia -y suffix3, apparently so called because the disorder was thought to affect the upper parts of the head (taking ancient Greek ἀνά in the sense ‘up’). In sense 2 directly after ancient Greek ἀνάληψις suspension in a sling.
Medicine.
