Etymology: < Latin excuss- participial stem of excutĕre , < ex- out + quatĕre to shake; the verb had also the sense of searching a person by shaking his loose robe. Compare sense 2.
Obsolete.
1. transitive. To shake off, cast off, get rid of. Said with reference to things material and immaterial.
