Etymology: < classical Latin ēvect-, past participial stem of ēvehere (see evect v.) + -or suffix. Compare evectant n.
Mathematics. Obsolete. rare.
In or with reference to the writings of J. J. Sylvester: a differential operator which produces a contravariant, called an evectant, of a homogeneous polynomial when applied to one of the invariants of that polynomial. Frequently attributive.The evector is formed by replacing each coefficient a in the polynomial with a differential operator d/ da.
