Etymology: Origin unknown.Often associated with classical Latin ibex ibex n., although a direct relationship with this word is unlikely for phonological reasons. This association is probably based on Higgins's translation of Junius (see quot. 1585); it is also reflected in 17th-cent. dictionaries. A borrowing from Welsh ewig doe, hind (formerly also written ewic , Old Welsh eguic ; < a derivative of the Indo-European base of ewe n.¹) has been suggested, if so with the sense perhaps influenced by association with classical Latin ibex.
