Examiner in Chancery
b. spec. Originally (more fully Examiner in Chancery and variants): an officer of a court of equity who takes down in writing witnesses' testimonies (now historical and rare). In later use: a person appointed to take down in writing depositions made out of court, esp. by witnesses unable to attend in person. (Now the usual legal sense.)
