Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anagoge.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anagoge mystical interpretation of scripture (4th cent. in Jerome), lifting up of the mind, contemplation (9th cent. in a British source) < ancient Greek ἀναγωγή act of leading up, in Hellenistic Greek also mystical interpretation of scripture, lifting up of the soul to God < ἀνα- ana- prefix + ἀγωγή carrying, leading (see agogic adj.2), after ἀνάγειν to lead up, lift up, elevate. Compare earlier anagogy n., and also earlier anagogic adj., anagogical adj.Compare Middle French (rare) anagoge (1495).

1. Mystical or spiritual interpretation, esp. of scripture; (also) a symbol conveying a mystical or spiritual meaning; the use or occurrence of such symbols; = anagogy n. 1.See note at anagogical adj. 1.
