Etymology: < post-classical Latin anagoge mystical interpretation of scripture (4th cent. in Jerome), lifting up of the mind, contemplation (9th cent. in a British source) < ancient Greek ἀναγωγή act of leading up, in Hellenistic Greek also mystical interpretation of scripture, lifting up of the soul to God < ἀνα- ana- prefix + ἀγωγή carrying, leading (see agogic adj.²), after ἀνάγειν to lead up, lift up, elevate. Compare earlier anagogy n., and also earlier anagogic adj., anagogical adj.Compare Middle French (rare) anagoge (1495).
